If there is one unofficial rule in the entertainment world it is this: You cannot out-do Bill Murray. However you can emulate and pay homage to the comedy giant and that’s just what Oscar Isaac did in a short video for GQ in which he covers Murray’s classic Star Wars theme from 1978.
The star of Star Wars: The Force Awakens sat down with GQ (he’ll grace the cover of the magazine’s January issue) and picked up his guitar to give the world his best rendition of the Star Wars theme “lyrics” just as Murray did all those years ago. For the uninitiated, in the third season of Saturday Night Live Bill Murray’s lounge singer character Nick Winters was cashing in on the fame of what was then, a brand new movie by adding lyrics to the John Williams’ score. Even if you don’t remember the sketch, there’s a good chance you’ve heard someone sing along to the theme with Murray’s silly (but I really mean amazing) “Star Wars, nothing but Star Wars…”
Isaac updates the lyrics mentioning Rey, Poe, Finn, BB-8, and Kylo Ren, mirroring the lyrics of the 1978 sketch. Sadly, there’s not a properly licensed or even good quality version of the original tune out there on the web (Get on that, Hulu!), so we’ll leave the Googling of the original up to you. We just hope that with the success of the new Star Wars films we get to see Isaac host SNL and have Murray come on as a guest so they can do a lounge duet: Nick Winter’s & Son.
