ORPHAN BLACK’s Full Season 3 Trailer Shows a Brave New World for the Clones

When Orphan Black returns Saturday, April 18th, the sestrahood like no other faces some serious consequences after the events of season two. Sarah’s discovered the existence of male clones (Ari Millens), a.k.a Project Castor, Rachel’s presumed dead and missing an eye, Alison has revealed everything to her husband Donnie, and Helena’s been taken by armed forces (infiltrated by Project Castor clones).

In an interview with our own Alicia Lutes, series co-creator John Fawcett remarked, “Everything changes in season three! Really changes… I think that you kinda do things for a little while and you’re like, ‘OK, now we’ve got to shake it all up again,’ you know?” And now, with the first full-length trailer for season three, we get a glimpse at just how crazy this expanded clone universe is going to be:

Phew, ok. Let’s break this down for a minute, Clone Club. Mrs. S comes clean to Sarah about trading Helena to Project Castor for still-unknown reasons (“a war-time decision”), and one of the male clones also tells Sarah to “count her sisters.” Now, that could be about Helena’s disappearance, or it could be a different sister entirely.

We also get a look at some of the presumed baddies this season: True Blood‘s most excellent James Frain (looking practically unrecognizable/great with tortoiseshell glasses and lighter-than-usual hair), another sinister looking doctor, and Delphine (Evelyne Brochu). Has Delphine officially joined the dark side? Is her loyalty directly correlated to her hair? Even Cosima knows she can’t really trust anyone, admitting, “We can’t rely on anyone but ourselves.”

We also get to see several of the male clones in action: one with blood red “x” scars over his eyes, a more lucid version being held captive, one with the Shaun from Boy Meets World haircut, an army clone, and a veeeery creepy looking fella with an extra creepy ‘stache. Not only was the reveal that Ari Millen would be playing all the male clones such a delicious surprise, he has already shown an impressive range that will hopefully match Tatiana Maslany‘s mind-boggling talent. From this trailer alone, we can sense the very distinct differences between the Project Castor clones. Millen demonstrates wild insanity, brooding aggression, and excessive sliminess, all in one minute.

There are mostly just snippets of Alison, Cosima, and Felix, who are likely tied up in other storylines the show is still keeping under wraps. There’s a quick shot of Rachel staring blankly ahead with her one good eye. Is she alive? In a coma? We suspect we’ll find out by the time the first episode is through. The last thing we see is that poor Helena’s been stuffed in yet another cage, this time a wooden box. The trailer ends on a high note though, with our beloved angry angel telling one of the male clones matter-of-factly, “One day, I kill you all.” We believe it.

All in all, it looks like all of the clones are going to be facing the ramifications of another set of clones in the mix. And like Rachel, these male clones are fully self-aware. What does that mean for the sestrahood? Are all the clones from Project Castor antagonists, or will the two sides find a way to help each other? So many questions, but at least we’re now only two-ish months away from more answers.
