ORPHAN BLACK Hits SDCC with Clone Improv, Fan Contest, and More

We’ve got great news, Clone Club. The side-splitting blooper reel wasn’t the only thing BBC America‘s Orphan Black brought to their farewell panel at San Diego Comic-Con this year. In addition to explaining more on why they decided to end the show with season five (which we’re still bummed about), and teasing what’s next, the show’s über talented, Emmy Award-nominated star Tatiana Maslany brought her A game with some fun clone improv, which you can check out in the video above.

In the fun clip, Tatiana kicked things off as Sarah, the show’s main character. Naturally, the next scene featured Helena and Alexis ordering appetizers. “If you don’t watch your back, you will be appetizer,” was the key piece of advice we took away from that bit. But of course nothing beats the superb chemistry between Donnie and Alison at a Trump rally. Seeing the actress transform at the drop of a hat is absolutely mesmerizing.

On ending with season five, co-creator Graeme Manson explained: “We sort of had five seasons in mind, and the thing that we just didn’t want to do is get kind of soft around the middle. We think that it’s better to cancel yourself than to get canceled, than to peter out.”

Co-creator John Fawcett explained that they’ve known how they wanted it to all end for quite some time. Of course, Tatiana is still in the dark, though she does know a bit about how it’s going to be starting, thanks to sitting in on a writers room session.

While the showrunners kept their plot plans pretty close to the chest, they did reveal one of the things they have in mind. They want to have one of the actors in a musical segment (much like Alison’s moment with Jesus Christ Superstar). We’re not sure if they were completely serious, but we’re all for it. They also mentioned wanting to have 12 clones in one scene, which we’d also love to see.

Probably the biggest reveal from the panel, however, was that the show will be holding a contest offering one lucky fan the chance to have a walk-on role in the final season. Details regarding the competition will be revealed at a later date.

Orphan Black is set to return for its fifth and final season in 2017 on BBC.
