Ommegang’s New GAME OF THRONES Beer to Honor the Three-Eyed Raven

We’re going to get more of the Three-Eyed Raven — just not the way you may have wanted it. After finding out on Wednesday that the fifth season of HBO’s Game of Thrones would go sans Bran and Hodor’s storyline, Brewery Ommegang announced shortly thereafter that their latest Realm-centric beer would be called Three-Eyed Raven in honor of the series’ most mysterious new cast member to date.

A dark saison ale, Three-Eyed Raven beer has as much of a dual existence as its on-screen inspiration, and will make its debut alongside the fifth season of the series in the spring of 2015.

Beer drinkers will no doubt be intrigued by the concept. And that’s exactly what drew the beer and its concept together. “When we zeroed in on Bran’s storyline with HBO,” explained Mike McManus, Brewery Ommegang’s Innovation Manager (which is apparently a job and probably now on the dream career list of any one who loves a good cold one), “we knew this was the perfect opportunity to brew something with many different characteristics and attributes – a beer that’s not truly one thing or another. It is definitely the most unique beer in the series to date, which is very exciting.”

For those of you into details, the Three-Eyed Raven beer is brewed with “a carefully crafted mixture of specialty malts, including malted rye, midnight wheat (provides depth of color but not the roasty flavor of a dark beer), and dark candi sugar. It’s hopped with Hallertau Spalt Select, Tettnang, and Bravo hops, which give the beer a spicy, fruity character. A fair amount of late-addition hops are added for character. Three-Eyed Raven is fermented and bottle-conditioned with Ommegang’s signature house yeast. Saison qualities dominate Three-Eyed Raven with fruity esters, clean floral hops aromas, a light malt character with just a hint of roast and a pleasant yeastiness in the taste, and a crisp finish with lingering herbal hops and dry rye notes.”

So now everyone knows what they’re drinking at their premiere parties, right? Raise your hands in the comments.
