Olympic Figure Skater Perfectly Transforms Into COWBOY BEBOP’s Spike Spiegel

There’s a hidden realm of subtle cosplaying going on inside professional figure skating. From Broadway and ballet to film characters and everything in between, certain young figure skaters like to pay homage to great scores and great personalities out on the ice. Most recently, Kevin Reynolds payed homage to one of the greatest anime series of all time in his short program routine as Cowboy Bebop‘s Spike Spiegel set to Yoko Kanno’s brassy big band theme, “Tank!”

A 25-year-old Canadian figure skater and previous member of the Canadian men’s team at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Reynolds knows a thing or two about fandom. His 2014-2015 season free skate routine featured Koji Kondo’s theme for The Legend of Zelda and for the 2011-2012 season he also did a free skate routine from Yasunori Mitsuda’s theme for Chrono Trigger. His past program musical credits also include AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, and Bobby McFerrin. But this Bebop routine takes the cake in authentic expression. A truly spectacular Spike cosplay requires equal amounts of sass, clumsiness, charm, and egotism. It’s great to see this character represented in another creative form. And that deliberate fall towards the end of this routine pulls everything together in a fabulous Spike Spiegel fashion.

Here’s hoping Reynolds continues to combine cosplay and skating together for many more seasons to come. Perhaps he’ll have a Final Fantasy-themed routine ready for the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea? Let us know which ice-skating cosplay character you’d like to see below!
