Olivia Munn Wants a PSYLOCKE Solo Film After X-MEN: APOCALYPSE

After making a very small appearance in X-Men: The Last Stand (as played by Meiling Melançon), Psylocke is getting a second chance at cinematic stardom in X-Men: Apocalypse later this year. This time, Olivia Munn is stepping into the role of the fan-favorite X-Men character. And if Munn achieves her ambition, it won’t be the last time.

During a new interview with Collider, Munn expressed an interest in reprising her role for a potential Psylocke solo movie. “I think if Psylocke had a chance to tell her story, it would be great to start with the genesis and have an understanding [of her origin],” said Munn. “We jump in right before all of her family is taken out and we have an understanding of what she had to lose. Then her figuring out her powers and how powerful she is. I think that would be a great thing too, because it’s something that I always loved about her. That she came from a good family and lost everything. Yeah, I would just like to tell that story.”

Frankly, the X-Men movie franchise is overdue for a solo film about one of its many intriguing female characters. The X-Men comic book universe has several strong and interesting women, including Storm, Rogue, Jean Grey, Mystique, and of course, Psylocke. In this case, Psylocke may actually be an ideal choice to headline a solo film because she’s not a member of the X-Men in the new movie—therefore, any further adventures with her don’t have to be directly tied to their storylines, and may spring off in any number of new directions.

Psylocke is also well suited to headline an action-oriented feature film because of her powers and her fighting skills. Her particular realm of telepathic and telekinetic powers could also make for an especially thrilling, psychologically dense standalone film.

Casual X-Men fans may not realize that Psylocke has actually been around in the Marvel comic book universe since the ‘70s, before she rose to prominence as a member of the X-Men in 1986. Psylocke’s comic book origin is a little convoluted (especially in regards to her ninja makeover), but that story could probably be streamlined for the X-Men movieverse.
