File this under Things That We Need That We Are So Excited About: Kristen Wiig, esteemed funnyperson and writer of one of our favorite recent comedies, Bridesmaids, will make her directorial debut on the big screen quite soon. And not only that but she’s co-writing the film with her partner in scriptsanity, Annie Mumolo. To which we can only say: Oh hell to the yes.
We’re lacking in details at the moment â the women are still in the process of finishing the script â but what we do know is Wiig and Mumolo will be playing best friends in the flick. The sorta friends that find themselves in over their heads and out of their depth in one way or another.
“We’re very excited to be writing,” Wiig and Mumolo said in a statement. “We will be going into a cave for months to finish. An actual cave. We found one that’s nice and big. We’re putting a couch in there.”
“Kristen and Annie assured me that the film will be a searing and depressing drama, which is what the world needs right now,” said TriStar Production’s Tom Rothman. “So we grabbed it. Perhaps more to the point, these two supremely talented ladies are always ahead of the comedy curve and as we at TriStar push for originality, we are lucky as hell to be in business with them. The chance to hopefully make Kristen’s first film as a director is the cherry on top.”
And while the news of Wiig is exciting, we’re glad she’s collaborating with Mumolo again. The supremely talented writer recently wrote the Jennifer Lawrence starrer-to-be, Joy, a biopic about the inventor of the Miracle Mop. You also may have seen her act (in addition to her turn as the paranoid plane seat buddy of Wiig’s in Bridesmaids) in This is 40 and the NBC series About a Boy.
Alright, on a scale of one to ten, how excited are you for this Wiigian career development? Let us hear it in the comments.
