NYU Now Offers a Bachelor’s Degree in Video Games

I kid you not, my Facebook profile states that I majored in “Video Gaming.” While that’s not exactly true (I have a degree in History of Art), it should have been since the majority of my papers and projects heavily focused on video games. But it still wasn’t the same. Most of my professors didn’t quite understand the art, and I craved to study about the things that actually felt like home. Luckily for all you Millennials out there, the days of pining for a college supporting the fine arts of Video Gaming are now long gone, because NYU is going to offer a bachelor’s degree in video game design!

Starting in 2015, the NYU Game Center, which is a department within the Tisch School of the Arts, will offer a degree in the fine arts of video game design. While it’s great news for those youngins eager to get their learning game on, only 20 students will be accepted into the program that offers courses such as “Play Labs,” which allows students to “critically play” games of a particular designer, studio, or genre. Seriously, I will go through the cycle of Undergrad all over again to do this. Where do I sign up?

Though game design isn’t necessarily new, it’s mostly only been offered at specialized tech schools. Its inclusion at NYU will be the first at a liberal arts college and a serious level up that will hopefully lead to more video game programs at other Universities across the US.

Get ready to start counting all those college video game tournaments as extra credit, folks.

Heard about this recently. Interesting to see such a thing outside of tech specific schools. I wonder how many other major universities will start to follow suit.

  2. Yann says:

Well in France we not only have had that for a while but also a MBA in Video Games that I had with honors 3 years ago already.
    Kudos to NYU nonetheless.
