Noomi Rapace Circles Amy Winehouse Biopic

Noomi Rapace is known for her more ass-kicking style of work: think Dr. Elizabeth Shaw from Prometheus (who will appear in Alien: Paradise Lost) or the original, Swedish iteration of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo  film trilogy. But one of Rapace’s next movie roles may considerably more down to Earth: Amy Winehouse.

Rapace is reportedly in negotiations to portray the late Winehouse, the British soul and jazz singer who passed away in 2011. Kirsten Sheridan (August Rush) has already written the script and plans to direct it as well. There’s no studio currently attached to the project, but it is said to be drawing considerable attention at the annual American Film Market and a deal may be coming soon.

Internationally, Rapace is best known as the original Lisbeth Salander, but she also starred in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Dead Man Down, The Drop, Child 44, Beyond, and The Monitor.

Presumably, the Amy Winehouse biopic will explore her meteoric rise in the music industry, as well as her battle with drug and alcohol addiction that ended her life when she was only 27 years old. The music rights for the project may be tricky, since they are controlled by Winehouse’s father, Mitchell Winehouse, and he appears to have plans for his own film project about the brief life of his daughter. Both Mitchell and Janis Winehouse have written books about their daughter. Winehouse was also the subject of Asif Kapadia’s recently released (and critically acclaimed) documentary, Amy.
