Destiny: The Taken King marks the end of the often maligned, yet beloved Dinklebot. In a surprising move, Bungie announced the recasting of the companion Ghost bot, which was originally filled by the usually spectacular actor Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones). I say usually because his work in Destiny was mediocre at best. It was hilariously monotone at its absolute worst. He is now being replaced by Nolan North, the man who voices the iconic Nathan Drake from the Uncharted series. He will attempt to bring more charisma and personality to the role.
The gradual voice change will start with the upcoming expansion for the title, The Taken King. North is not only the voice of the future, but will also rerecord all of the previous lines so that one seamless experience is created.
This news comes courtesy of this month’s Gameinformer cover story, in which the new actor chimes in about giving the tiny companion some pizzazz, “you want to give him as much personality as the world will allow, without making it unbelievable. Thereâs a fine line to walk there, and I think we found it”. There’s no doubt Nolan North has done a fine job, but the delivery of the script was only a moderate part of the issues with the lack of narrative in the game. At least he has ample experience in the video game realm, and can hopefully use it to make the companion more likable.
Thankfully, all of the retroactive work can never erase the Dinklebot voice echoed from the physical Ghost included with the collector’s edition of Destiny prime. Many more changes will be announced soon for the title, including a higher level cap for all Guardians, so stay tuned for that.
What do you think about this change? Do you think Nolan North can improve the Ghost’s delivery in a significant manner? Let us know in the comments section below.
