Nobody Gets Away in the New NOCTURNAL ANIMALS Trailer

Next month, Amy Adams is headlining two films in two consecutive weeks. Of course, we’re quite eager to see Adams in the grounded sci-fi movie, Arrival, but we’re also very intrigued to see her in Nocturnal Animals as well. That movie looks like it was made in the classic thriller mold, and our very own Dan Casey gave it a rave review last month at TIFF. Now, Focus Features has released a new Nocturnal Animals trailer to give fans a taste of what they can expect to see.

However, the new Nocturnal Animals trailer is a little disorienting because it doesn’t offer much in the way of context. So, here’s the short version to bring everyone up to speed. Adams is playing an art gallery owner named Susan Morrow, while Jake Gyllenhaal is portraying her ex-husband, Edward Sheffield. As you can see in the beginning of the trailer, Susan and Edward seemingly have a cordial relationship. But Susan has read Edward’s new novel, and she’s convinced that the violent story it contains may be Edward’s way of threatening her.

As for Edward, he’s the hero of his own story…literally! Gyllenhaal is playing a duel role as Tony Hastings, the protagonist of Edward’s novel; which like the movie, is also called Nocturnal Animals. As events play out in Susan’s life, we’ll also see Edward’s novel unfold on its way to its conclusion. There’s a good chance that Susan may not be wrong about Edward’s intentions towards her. “I did something horrible to him,” said Susan in the new trailer. That implies that Susan may believe that Edward is justified in any revenge that he seeks. Or is the vendetta entirely in her own mind?

Nocturnal Animals will open in theaters on November 18.
