No, There Won’t Be a New Trailer for STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS at D23 Expo

Back at San Diego Comic-Con, Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams confirmed the next trailer for the highly anticipated film wouldn’t be ready until the fall. Optimistic folks who thought fall might mean August and skeptical folks who thought Abrams wasn’t being entirely honest hoped that was code for a new trailer debuting at D23 Expo. Look, it’s easy to delude yourself when it comes to Star Wars. However, Abrams has now double confirmed to Entertainment Weekly (EW) that there will not be a new trailer or any new footage a la the Comic-Con behind-the-scenes reel at the Disney convention. He said, “It is true, we are showing no footage, behind the scenes or otherwise. In the fall, there’ll be a trailer.” Abrams continued, “We’re thrilled to go to D23 and meet the fans, but it’s a tricky thing to try and rush [footage] for a convention or preexisting event that would, of course, be fun to show something at.”

That’s an exaggerated reaction, but I am a tiny bit disappointed there won’t be anything new. On the other hand, I don’t want to see too much before the film is released in December. Mixed feelings. I have them.

No footage doesn’t mean there won’t be any fresh information at all about The Force Awakens. Plus, we shouldn’t forget about Rogue One. Now that Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation has hit theaters, Disney and Lucasfilm should be free to discuss and promote the anthology film.

But back to The Force Awakens, EW also asked for an update on the film. Abrams said, “I’m still editing and we’re working on refining the cut, but it’s incredibly fun to see the movie come together.” It’s not anything earth-shattering, but hey, Abrams talks about The Force Awakens and we all listen.

If you’re feeling bummed about the lack of a new trailer, I recommend watching the behind-the-scenes reel from Comic-Con over and over. It always makes my day better.

Head to the comments and tell me when exactly you think we’ll get the next trailer.
