The Latest Movie News on STAR TREK, CLOVERFIELD, PREDATOR, GLASS and More

There’s been an avalanche of news from this year’s CinemaCon, so on today’s Nerdist News Talks Back we broke down the latest on the future of Star Trek, Cloverfield, Predator, Jurassic World, Aquaman, and more, along with our reactions to the new Star Wars animated series.

Hosting again today was Dan Casey, and he was joined by producers Jason Nguyen, Derek Johnson, and Ben McShane. They started by hitting the hyperdrive on the newest cartoon from the galaxy far, far away, the upcoming Star Wars Resistance. The anime-inspired series will explore the time before The Force Awakens, with Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie voicing Poe and Phasma. What do we think of this setting? Would we have preferred a different time period? What anime shows do we hope they take inspiration from? Will this help fix the issues with Phasma’s story from the films? And what other media formats would we like to see Star Wars creators try their (mechanical) hand at?

But with so much news coming out of CinemaCon–movie theater owners’ very own SDCC, held in Las Vegas where they get sneak peaks at upcoming films–they had to break down all of it, including reports we are getting two Star Trek sequels. If one is the Quentin Tarantino film, what could the second be? What do we hope it is? Are we more excited for that or J.J. Abrams’ mysterious next Cloverfield film? Or did Cloverfield Paradox burn us out on the franchise? And are we still excited over his R-rated WWII Overlord film?

Speaking of sequels, does anyone want a followup to A Quiet Place? Should the movie get to stand on its own? What do we think of Shane Black’s upcoming The Predator, which will see the alien hunters upgrading themselves with DNA from other species? Do we think M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass will be a hit? And when it comes to seeing more and more footage from big budget blockbusters, would we actually prefer if studios took a “less is more” approach?

Remember, Nerdist News Talks Back airs live on our YouTube and Alpha channels Monday through Thursday at 1 p.m. PT, and tomorrow make sure you tune into our hour long Nerdist News What the Fridays, where we recap the week’s biggest pop culture stories. NNWTF airs at 1 p.m. PT exclusively at Alpha.
