After a long drought of Metroid games, Nintendo finally gave fans what they wanted at E3. In addition to announcing Metroid Prime 4 for the Switch, Nintendo revealed that the 3DS is getting a lavish remake of Metroid II: Samus Returns. And while Metroid: Samus Returns won’t hit the 3DS until next month, Nintendo has already lined up a special edition of the 3DS to mark the occasion.
Via Kotaku, Nintendo has announced the Samus Edition of the Nintendo 3DS XL, which features a stylish rendition of the titular heroine, Samus Aran, on the side. It’s definitely a thing of beauty, and we want it!
Nintendo didn’t include pricing information with its initial reveal of the 3DS XL Samus Edition, but it did note that it will be available at “select retailers” starting September 15. That also happens to be the release date for Metroid: Samus Returns. We can’t be sure how widely available this will beâNintendo has a bad habit of not being able to keep its systems on store shelves very longâbut the Samus Edition is one of the rare times that we’ll even consider camping out for something!
As nice as this is, the real prize will be the new Metroid game, which will not be packaged with the Samus Edition. Metroid: Samus Returns isn’t merely a remake. It’s been completely re-imagined with 3D effects on a 2D plane, while giving Samus some new tricks and the ability to turn her arm cannon a full 360-degrees. The backgrounds and visuals are also stunning, and two of the composers from Super Metroid, Kenji Yamamoto and Minako Hamano, have returned to provide the music for this game.
