A wise man once said that all good things come a little later than they should. That wise man’s name appears to be Eiji Aonuma, and he more or less made this implication by announcing that Nintendo’s Wii U installment of The Legend of Zelda won’t see the light of day until 2016. The series producer’s statement came from a video uploaded to both Facebook and YouTube.
“In these last three months, as the team has experienced firsthand the freedom of exploration that hasn’t existed in any Zelda game to date, we have discovered several new possibilities for this game,” Aonuma stated. “As we have worked to turn these possibilities into reality, new ideas have continued to spring forth, it now feels like we have the potential to create something that exceeds even my own expectations.
“As I have watched our development progress, I have come to think that rather than work with meeting a specific schedule as our main objective, and releasing a game that reflects only what we can create within that scheduled time, I feel strongly that our focus should be to bring all these ideas to life in a way that will make The Legend of Zelda on Wii U the best game it can possibly be.”
To make matters a little more excruciating for fans anticipating the game, Nintendo announced on Twitter that the game won’t be making an appearance at E3 either.
Mr. Aonuma & team will be hard at work on #Zelda and have decided not to show it @ E3. Thanks for your patience! https://t.co/bwu3nd3fNi

As per usual when things like this happen, there’s that bittersweet feeling of disappointment that we won’t be seeing the game sooner rather than later, followed by the optimism that the decision to take time and fully develop a title brews. For those who don’t remember, the next Zelda game is the open-world announced during E3 last year. We got a small taste of it during the Game Awards back in December, but it looks like we’ll be waiting until possibly Gamescom before we see anything else on it.
Is the news of the Wii U Zelda game getting pushed back discouraging? Or are you use to this process and hopeful that the game will turn out better than ever. Slingshot your thoughts into the comments below.
