Nintendo Comments On Recent E3 Criticism

Do you hear that? That’s Nintendo marching to the beat of their own drum. Of course, that’s old news, and in reality is part of their charm. E3 is no different for the mega-Japanese company, they choose a different route to connect with their fans. By choosing to broadcast their Nintendo Direct instead of holding a standard conference, the company has more control over their message. Another result from this bold choice is a more intimate connection with their biggest and most loyal of fans. Most of their Nintendo Direct live feeds have been applauded and considered a success, but this year’s E3 wasn’t one of these instances, unfortunately.

Fans were sorely disappointed at the lack of new announcements and new games in total, since they chose to mostly speak about titles we already knew about. During a recent briefing with their investors, Shigeru Miyamoto said that the criticism was understandable. He continued to say that the reason they were lacking titles was because they didn’t show any third-party projects. On the same token, he didn’t seem impressed by Nintendo’s competitors’ line-ups, “Sony and Microsoft had many announcements of future titles that were not playable. VR lined the floor as a dream exhibit. There were lots of video demos of those titles.”

Miyamoto continued to talk about the type of experience they are producing.”There were lots of video demos of those titles. Nintendo played them. They received high praise as living room game consoles,” he said. To further prove his point, he continued, “This is what Nintendo’s booth looked like. It was different from other companies; everyone was smiling, having fun with games.”

Most of what the legendary Miyamoto said is on point. By focusing on games that are within 6 months of release, they give fans a realistic look at the near future, instead of making promises that may be years away. Furthermore, their games are definitely more geared at bringing people together and creating that fun environment that no other company can rival.

It does sound like the legendary game designer was throwing some jabs at his competitors, though. Keep in mind that these quotes do come from Twitter user Nstyles, who was reporting live from the briefing, and then translated by trusted reporter Cheesemeister. As top notch and reputable as they may be, some things can always be lost in translation.

How do you feel about the mindset of the Big N? Were you impressed by their games? Let us know in the comments section below.
