How the New VENOM Trailer Has Fans Completely Confused

It’s never easy making a comic book movie that will please everyone, but Venom has had a particularly rough time convincing people that Sony can create a film about Spider-Man‘s greatest enemy without actually using Spidey. The first two trailers offered only fleeting glimpses of Tom Hardy‘s Eddie Brock in full Venom symbiote mode. However, the newly released trailer has all of the Venom you can handle and more. So why are fans left scratching their heads by the latest footage? Today’s Nerdist News spins a web to bring you the answers!

Join host and symbiote hunter Jessica Chobot as she walks us through the Venom trailer and its wildly uneven tone. Producer Amy Pascal has previously described Venom and the other upcoming Spidey-less spinoff movies as being “adjunct” to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but this movie feels about as far away from the MCU as it gets. The level of violence definitely pushes the R-rating, and the humor is a bit forced. That “turd in the wind” line may be this generation’s “Do you know what happens when a toad gets struck by lightning?”

On the plus side, at least the word symbiote was correctly pronounced in this trailer. It also gave us the first glimpse at the other symbiotes in the film, including Riz Ahmed as Carlton Drake/Riot. However, Woody Harrelson’s character is mysteriously absent. We still think Harrelson would be a great choice for Carnage, even if he’s being saved for a cameo role now and a larger part in any sequel that follows.
