New Trailer and Details Arrive for BATTLEBORN

It’s been nearly a year since Gearbox Software and 2K Games announced their upcoming hero shooter Battleborn. While we’ve heard slim-to-nothing about the title for nearly nine months, 2K has come forward with another trailer and some new details about the title–which is set to launch Spring of 2016 on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC.

Included in the official announcement was the revelation that the game will feature 25 unique players, all of which boast different abilities and weapons which you can upgrade through the “Helix System”. This allows players to boost from a level 1-10 in a single mission or competitive multiplayer match. As of right now, only 9 of the 25 heroes have been officially announced, but hopefully we hear more during E3 or throughout the course of the year.

Also, they revealed that in the story mode, you can either play alone or cooperatively by up to five friends via splitscreen or online. The modular story mode in place gives players the option to both choose which missions they play and go back for more loot after completing it.

As for the competitive team-based multiplayer, it can be experienced by up to 10 players online in 5v5 matches and includes three distinct modes, which I’ve grabbed from the press release and listed below:

  • Incursion: Teams of heroes defend their base from waves of AI-controlled minions while working together, alongside their own minions, to destroy their opponents’ base;
  • Devastation: Teams of heroes face off in a fast-paced death match and must capture and hold objectives on the map to win;
  • Meltdown: Teams of heroes protect their minions as they march to their death at the center of the map. Points are scored for minions who throw themselves into the incinerator, and the team with the most points wins.

The developer also announced a persistent progression system which explains how experience contribute to leveling up both character rank, and the player profile command rank. Check out the developer’s explanation below:

  • Character Rank: Each hero can permanently rank up from 1 to 10 outside of missions and matches, allowing players to swap out augments in their helix skill tree, as well as unlock skins.
  • Command Rank: Players can rank-up their own player profile, unlocking badges and titles to impress friends, and loot that can be used to benefit any hero the player chooses to command.

With E3 so close we can taste it, we are sure to hear or at least see more about the title in the coming weeks. Looking at it right now, it is looking a bit like Blizzard’s Overwatch–which is also set to release in 2016. It will definitely be interesting to see the two side by side when they launch next year.
