The number of speedsters on the CW’s The Flash is going to be growing significantly as it heads into season two. Last week news broke that the part of teenager Wally West—Barry Allen’s future nephew and future sidekick Kid Flash (not to mention the Barry’s eventual successor as the Flash when he’s all grown up)—was cast with actor Keiynan Lonsdale. Now we have our first look at actor Teddy Sears in the part of Jay Garrick, the Flash of Earth-2—fully in costume—in an homage to the cover for The Flash #123 from 1961, the issue where Barry Allen crossed dimensional space and met his counterpart from a parallel world. The CW tweeted out the image below, along with a side-by-side comparison with the original, classic cover.

The Earth-2 Flash costume is very old school, and based on the classic costume worn by Jay Garrick when he first appeared way back in Flash Comics #1 in 1940, complete with the winged Mercury helmet. It only took Jay seventy five years to make it to live-action, but better late than never! It’s also nice to see that the producers have let Jay wear his original look, and not his redesign from the New 52. For his first time ever on the screen, it’s best to keep things classic.

The meeting of the two Flashes in that issue ushered in the concept of the DC Multiverse, something to which the live-action versions of these stories is finally catching up. Knowing that there’s a DC television multiverse now opens up all kinds of possibilities—like a potential crossover with the new Supergirl series on CBS sometime down the line. It could even be used to explain why there are two distinct versions of Barry Allen, the one on  TV at the moment, and the upcoming movie version which will star Ezra Miller.
