New STAR WARS Novel Tells Leia Organa’s Story

Leia Organa deserves all the spotlights. Every single one of them. The General and Princess of Alderaan knows how to lead and save skins, and she can rock some otherwise questionable hairstyles like nobody else. At long last, Leia will get her place in the sun (or suns, if you’re from Tatooine), and take the starring role in an upcoming novel titled Star Wars: Bloodline. Claudia Gray, author of Lost Stars, will explore what happens with Leia in the years between Return of the Jedi and The Force Awakens.

The book finds her as a high-ranking senator in the New Republic. However, Leia realizes something is awry. We know the New Republic signed a Galactic Concordance with the Empire in the years after the Battle of Endor, but that the Empire didn’t quit. The First Order rose from the organization’s ashes, and Leia could sense the impending doom. Gray told USA Today that this new generation doesn’t remember the past, but that “Leia begins to see the cracks in the foundation that could lead to a dangerous future for the galaxy.”

The theme of family will play a large part in the book, though Bloodline isn’t solely concerned with Leia’s relationships with her soon-to-be-estranged husband and troubled son. The book gives focuses primarily on Leia’s work as a fighter and a leader. “This is about the role she’s created for herself since the fall of the Empire,” Gray said.

An excerpt from Bloodline on USA Today highlights the looming conflict:

“An entire generation has prospered during an era of peace. The New Republic, governed by the Galactic Senate on Hosnian Prime, has held power for more than two decades. Yet conflict has begun to take shape within the Senate. As political gridlock threatens to cripple the fledgling democracy, the quarrels of the New Republic will soon radiate throughout the galaxy…”
