New STAR WARS Comic Reveals How Captain Phasma Survived THE FORCE AWAKENS

Prior to Star Wars: The Force Awakens, many fans assumed that Gwendoline Christie‘s Captain Phasma would be a major player in the new trilogy. Instead, Phasma was unceremoniously dumped into a garbage chute off-screen after she was coerced into helping Finn, Han Solo, and Chewbacca deactivate the shield surrounding Starkiller Base. But fans won’t have to wait until The Last Jedi to see Phasma get a measure of redemption. Her revenge starts in Marvel’s new Captain Phasma miniseries, which is out today!

Warning: there are major spoilers ahead for Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Captain Phasma #1!

Via io9, the new story by writer Kelly Thompson and artist Marco Checchetto quickly establishes not only how Phasma managed to escape but also why she’s not being hunted down as a traitor by the First Order.

The short version is that Phasma owes her freedom to the Resistance, as one of the initial bombing runs blew a hole in the garbage containment unit and allowed her to get out after only a few minutes. The majority of the issue deals with Phasma’s attempt to cover her tracks and erase the record of her capitulation. Towards that end, she manages to frame someone else for her betrayal: Lieutenant Sol Rivas. Along the way, Phasma ruthlessly leaves her fellow soldiers behind to die and she even briefly glimpses the lightsaber duel between Kylo Ren and Rey.

Although Lieutenant Rivas also manages to make it off Starkiller Base alive, it appears that Phasma is now tracking him to ensure that her frame job holds up to scrutiny. The final pages of the issue also appear to introduce a First Order droid that looks suspiciously like BB-9e.

Journey to Star Wars: The Last Jedi: Captain Phasma #1 is in stores now, and the second issue will be released on Wednesday, September 20.
