New OVERWATCH Animations Make Us Very Happy

Blizzard is one of those companies that can’t help but tell great stories in their games. So, many wondered why a company like that would want to release a game like Overwatch, when online shooters tend to be a genre devoid of storytelling. One can guess it would be for the same reason they would venture into the worlds of MOBAs and CCGs: to capitalize on a popular gaming genre while also standing above the competition and reaffirming why they are so successful.

During Blizzcon’s Overwatch presentation Saturday, Blizzard’s visual effects supervisor Jeff Chamberlain presented the above video, detailing the process his team went through in crafting animated shorts that will build on the story and lore of Overwatch. The game’s collectors edition will also include a book that details more of the game’s story and the backgrounds of the major characters involved.

After the game’s initial animated trailer was released, some wondered if the game would even bother trying to keep to a story, or simply use the trailer as a proof of concept. Now, with the new animated footage presented, and the plans for shorts to follow upon the game’s release, fans will get to look forward to more beautiful and fun stories in the future. If they can top the badass action, exhilarating visuals, and adorable gorilla/peanut butter love we have already seen, then I am sold.
