New Legendary Pokémon Volcanion Has an Unprecedented Type Combination

In 2013, three new Pokémon were found hidden in the code of Pokémon X and Y. From that discovery, Nintendo has already revealed Hoopa, and today, Nintendo has also revealed Volcanion, a new legendary Pokémon. Volcanion is unlike any other Pokémon that has come before it thanks to a unique type combination: Volcanion is the first Fire- and Water-type Pokémon in the history of the series.

Volcanion will make its first anime appearance in the Pokémon X Y & Z movie in 2016, and it’s not clear how it will be distributed in the games, but it will be playable in X and Y, as well as Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Volcanion is the 721st Pokémon added to the series’ Pokédex, and is rumored to be the last new Pokémon of the current generation of games.

Conceptually, the closest thing to a Water- and Fire-type Pokémon is probably Torkoal, a Fire-type, turtle-like Pokémon who appears to blow steam from his nostrils and a blowhole on his back. However, it loses all ties to the water type when you realize that it is actually smoke that Torkoal emits: According to its Pokédex entry in Pokémon Ruby, “Torkoal digs through mountains in search of coal. If it finds some, it fills hollow spaces on its shell with the coal and burns it. If it is attacked, this Pokémon spouts thick black smoke to beat a retreat.” We wonder how Volcanion will compare.
