New KONG: SKULL ISLAND Trailer Looks Cooler, Funnier, and More Exciting

With every new glimpse of Kong: Skull Island we seem to get a different taste of what’s in store for the film. If we think back on our very first look at the monster movie out of last year’s San Diego Comic-Con, we’ll recall some desperately intense, and predominantly humorless, vibes–the sort you’d get from a high-octane disaster movie or war epic. But Kong seems to have loosened its image in the interim six months, hitting us with increasingly lighthearted trailers and clips, the latest of the bunch providing the apex of the trend at large. At last, Kong: Skull Island, which I once worried would be outright harrowing to endure, seems like it’ll be quite a bit of fun.

In this latest action-packed trailer, debuted by way of star Tom Hiddleston‘s Twitter account before being released officially by Warner Bros., it’s not only the gags tossed out (mostly by supporting player John C. Reilly, but also by Hiddleston and his co-lead Brie Larson) that foster this demeanor, but a newly playful visual flare–accompanied by the Animals’ macabre ’65 rock anthem “We’ve Got to Get Out of This Place”–that does the trick. Shots of delightfully imaginative monsters and bobblehead Nixons suggest Kong‘s audience will be rife with grins, and a quick suggestion that the titular beast may eventually warm up to Larson’s character is an encouraging (if not altogether surprising) inclusion.

But of course, the intensity and energy is still very much on display. All that noted, this may be the first Kong trailer that really gets my personal engines revved for the movie. Let us know how you feel about this jazzier new look at the picture.
