The latest trailer for Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar is ratcheting up the family drama. In the lead-up to the November release of the science fiction drama, it’s getting harder and harder to not care about Matthew MacConaughey’s farmer-astronaut and his fractured family.
I’m not choked up, there’s just a lot of pollen in here. Hush.
While the marketing up to this point has been pretty coy about the nature of the film, this and the last trailer have painted a clearer picture of life on an increasingly ruined Earth and in the far reaches of space McConaaughey and the rest of his expedition. That spacefaring team also includes David Oyelowo (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Jack Reacher) and Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises star Anne Hathaway. The rest of the cast of Interstellar is rounded out by Jessica Chastain, Michael Caine, Wes Bentley, Bill Irwin, Ellen Burstyn, and Topher Grace.
What surprised me was how free Warner Bros. and Nolan are being with some of the alien vistas and environments this far from the November 6 release. It feels like Nolan is drawing on everything from Kubrick to Contact, with a little bit of Sunshine thrown in for good measure. But if all of the talk about love and family are any indication, don’t expect something as chilly as Kubrick’s masterpiece, 2001 – Nolan seems to be targeting the heart instead of the head in a film begging for us to keep looking up at the stars.
