New GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Poster is Deliriously Old School

Let’s just call this one: “Rocket Raccoon: Unleashed!”

In truth, I love that the file name for this poster Marvel and Disney sent over is “Payoff.” Because this big, crazy poster for Guardians of the Galaxy feels like just that in a movie that’s been carefully marketed as a summer sci-fi comedy, potentially leaving the action elements by the wayside.

What I love is that it’s a throwback to those ’80s sci-fi movie posters that were infinitely more interesting than the films they were hawking: all explosions and impossible FX shots for for movies that were shot largely in the North African desert by an Italian day crew. I’m looking at you, Metalstorm.*

Whether the Guardians of the Galaxy movie that this poster conjures up (and the one in my head) will match what director James Gunn brings to the screen in August remains to be seen, but based on the first trailer and early stills, I’m keeping myself optimistic for a balls-out sci-fi ‘splosion fest. But one with, you know, jokes.

In case you didn’t know, here are the official story bits:

From Marvel, the studio that brought you the global blockbuster franchises of Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers, comes a new team—the Guardians of the Galaxy. An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits—Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon, Groot, a tree-like humanoid, the deadly and enigmatic Gamora and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand—with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

The poster makes its debut the weekend before the studio releases a new trailer on Monday, May 19th alongside a Facebook Q&A with the film’s cast. Ask Bradley Cooper to do his Rocket Raccoon voice, will ya? View the teaser for the trailer and Facebook event below.

So what do you think of the new poster?

*Who am I kidding, Metalstorm? I love you. Let’s never fight.

This is OG Star Wars style right here

It’s alright, the idea is there, but it would have been elevated 100X if they had a painter do their interpretation of the ”photoshop collage.” Drew Struzan style.

A for effort, though. At least it’s not 5 different posters, each with a high contrast, monochromatic silhouette of one of the characters with the the only text being ”8.1.14.”

LOVE IT!!! My most anticipated movie of the summer!
