New GAME OF THRONES Synopses are Sparse But Ominous

Is Matthew Weiner writing the synopsis for Game of Thrones now that Mad Men is off the air? That would be one solidly well-reasoned explanation for the comically sparse descriptions/synopses we have for episodes four and five of the season. But—because we’re obsessive nerd-o types with hearts and minds made for obsessive speculation—there’s still ton to discuss about the potential things to come in season six. Especially when it comes to the fifth episode of the season, which actor Isaac Hempstead-Wright has already claimed in an interview will contain a heartbreaking realization.

Naturally, there are words about upcoming episodes we’ve yet to see down below. Words you may or may not interpret as spoilers for season six—proceed at your own risk!

First up? Episode 4, “Book of the Stranger.” Airing on the 15th, the episode is framed as such:

Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) strikes a deal. Jorah (Iain Glen) and Daario (Michiel Huisman) undertake a difficult task. Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) and Cersei (Lena Headey) try to improve their situation. (Written by David Benioff & D. B. Weiss; directed by Dan Sackheim.)

Episode 5, “The Door,” (airing on May 22nd), however, has a bit more of an ominous ring to it, especially when you consider what we discussed in a recent episode of Nerdist News. First, the synopsis:

Tyrion seeks a strange ally. Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) learns a great deal. Brienne (Gwendoline Christie) goes on a mission. Arya (Maisie Williams) is given a chance to prove herself. (Written by David Benioff & D. B. Weiss; directed by Jack Bender.)

See that bit where it says Bran “learns a great deal”? Now, given that it seems fair to assume on episode three we’re going to get the long-anticipated Tower of Joy flashback, we think a quote from a TV Guide Magazine feature speaks more to what the halfway point episode revelation may be. There’s “a top-secret scene” that was “shot in a Belfast soundstage containing the Raven’s lair, which portrays a revelation ‘sure to break fans’ hearts.'” What could this revelation be? We have our theories:

For most interviews being conducted, Hempstead Wright has been up front with Bran’s resistance to caring about the White Walkers, preferring to dip in and out of the past having fun rather than truly grappling with the implications his gifts have for the Realm. The war everyone should care about—but doesn’t because they’re people, too small to understand that it’s about so much more than a couple of wannabe kings—is that of Ice and Fire, Light and Darkness, maybe even the Night’s King and the Lord of Light, perhaps?

Now stick with us: our theory? If this secret scene is the one we get in episode five where he “learns a great deal,” we feel it’d be silly to think this was about anything other than the fate of the Realm. Meaning: maybe those quick glimpses we got of the Night’s King on the Raven’s Lair will actually be of a Jon Snow-y Night’s King, destroying everything (including Bran and the Weirwood tree/lair) if Bran does not intervene.

It’s a dark theory but, since we just got Jon Snow back from the dead, could anything be more heartbreaking? What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
