New FANTASTIC BEASTS Trailer Gives Newt a New York Welcome

Suicide Squad wasn’t the only hotly anticipated trailer to debut at the MTV Movie Awards. The new preview for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them also dropped tonight, and it offered up an extended glimpse of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) as he arrived in New York back in 1926. A beloved Harry Potter character was also name checked very early in the trailer!

The new trailer explains how Newt can travel the world with his amazing collection of magical creatures while escaping detection from the Muggles. Although the new film introduces the term “No-Maj,” we still prefer to use the word Muggles. It just rolls off the tongue in a more natural way.

We’re also quite charmed by the new trailer, which finds Newt exploring New York and discovering the underground magic scene while also acknowledging the rise of the anti-magic movement known as the New Salem Philanthropic Society. The trailer also suggests that Newt is a somewhat controversial figure in the magical world, and his reputation will probably take another hit when some of his creatures get loose in the city.

There are other fun tidbits in the trailer with Tina (Katherine Waterston) and her sister, Queenie (Alison Sudol) using their magical powers to show Newt around. Newt’s newfound Muggle friend, Jacob (Dan Fogler) also gets a very amusing introduction to Newt’s otherworldly abilities.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will magically appear in theaters on Friday, November 18.
