New “Doctor Who” Lead To Be Announced Sunday

We knew this day was coming, but we hadn’t the foggiest when… until now. The BBC has announced that the actor or actress who will play the Twelfth Doctor on Doctor Who will be unveiled LIVE in a televised special this Sunday at 7:00pm London Time on BBC One and 2:00pm ET/11:00am PT on BBC America. (That’s the exact same time, by the way).

From the official press release:
Widely regarded as one of the most hotly contested roles in British television, the special’s host Zoe Ball will unveil the Twelfth Doctor in their first ever interview in front of a live studio audience. The half hour show will include live special guests, Doctors old and new, as well as companions and celebrity fans. Current Doctor Matt Smith and lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat will both give interviews in the special.

Steven Moffat says: “The decision is made and the time has come to reveal who’s taking over the TARDIS. For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve.”

So, who has money on Zoe Ball being the Twelfth Doctor? Who do you think it’ll be? Now’s your last chance to weigh in because in less than three days, all this debate will be academic. Be sure to check Nerdist.com on Sunday after the announcement to get our take on the newest Who legend.

  1. William slough says:

I been watching Doctor Who since 1978. You may not have seen the episode that they tell you time lords reg.. 12 times that means their is 13 Doctors. This can not be the end and if a timelord is find guilty of crimes their lives could be transfer to another timelord that is on his last to go on. Since River Song used all her lives to save the doctor from dying did it give him more lives.

  2. TJ says:

I don’t know about Zoe Ball, but it would be Frakking AWESOME if Zoe Bell was the next doctor. I’d start watching the show if that happend. šŸ™‚

  3. EMITYDNA says:

I’ve been telling my wife for three years that the next doctor is goig to be rupert grint. I will probably have a heart attack if it proves to be true

  4. J-rod says:

This will still be the greatest show on Television no matter who gets the role. I don’t care who they get for the role, no matter what their gender, ethnicity or age…

…. as long as they’re not (shudder) American.
    (Peter Dinklage excluded obviously)

And as for a Female Doctor this piece of art from Paul Hanley changed my opinion from a negative to a positive.

  5. Jaddsy says:

Didn’t River Song giveThe Doctor her regenerations?

  6. Brian says:

My three favourites for the next Doctor are – Shaun Evans, Eddie Redmayne and Jonathan Bailey.

  7. Petra says:

I like Matt, but it feels like Dr Who has been kind of directionless the last few years.

At it’s most unique & effective, the show is about a Doctor who conveys both mischief and gravitas, outwitting neerdowells while adventuring his way through all of time & space with a pretty young girl. Simple.

The doctor has become an imp, who rarely ever leaves London, spent years hanging around a married couple, is apparently married to an old lady, is mired in depressing relationship hangups, and everything is accomplished with cgi’d light particle effects.

    wtf

I hope they sort it out before some of the story arcs drive the show up its own arse and strangle it from the inside, like star trek.

But mostly we shouldn’t feel sorry for the Doctor. …or Darth Vader.

  8. Joseph Bridges says:

If the Doctor can regerate 12 times, wouldnt there be a 13th as well?..

  9. michaelalexkawa says:

I can’t wait to see who it will be ,a female would be intriguing .

  10. Kristoffer says:

i hope its someone from south london with a cockney accent, like that chick from Misfits.

    barely understand her.

  11. sensu28 says:

Argh at 2pm et Sunday announcement time I will be at a local comic con with my cell off. Will either be watching an old (mid-20th century) zombie movie or in a long con line waiting to meet 2 Hobbits. Maybe I should opt for the line and an active cell phone. My guess for Twelfth Doctor? I will keep that to myself.

  12. Elizabeth says:

I just wanna see a ginger as the new Doctor. I feel its time we (myself and my fellow gingers) are represented on the show.

  13. Elizabeth says:

I just wanna see a ginger as the new Doctor. I feel its time we (myself and my fellow gingers) are represented on the show. Also i feel like it was hinted at in matts debut episode.

  14. The hardest decision I’ve ever had to make: Do I watch the special and find out who the next doctor is, or do I try and not find out until I watch the regeneration happen?

  15. jason says:

    POTENTIAL SPOILER!

Edit: I meant version 8.5 in previous post

  16. jason says:

    @john. POTENTIAL SPOILER!!!

many reports that john hurt was the “doctor” between eccleston and mcgann (version 9.5). But we won’t know for sure until the 50th anniversary special.

  17. John says:

    But… Um…
WHAT ABOUT JOHN HURT AT THE END OF LAST SEASON???? someone explain this to me!!

  18. SunnyLikeSunshine says:

It won’t be Cumberbatch – though I know many who’d love the idea. The rumor (true or untrue, we just don’t know) is that he wants out of TV commitments as he does ever more film. I’m hoping for a female Doctor, though I’d also wholly support a return to 8.

  19. Micalene` says:

I really don’t want to know until it happens, I’d rather be suprised.

  20. Kathy says:

Eager to see who will be piloted our TARDIS. A female cannot be the Doctor, but oldsters will remember Romana as a Time Lord trapped in E space. Would love to see Moffat bring her back as an additional companion.

  21. Jake A. Strife says:

I can’t wait to see who it is. I’m just sad to see Matt go.

  22. bob says:

I don’t care who it is, just please no question mark-themed outfits.

  23. Sarah says:

I just hope for the Doctor’s sake that the next person will be a ginger!

  24. Leilani says:

I’m thinking it might be John Hurt, which would be perfectly fine by me. I’m place a lot of trust on Steven Moffat to make a wise decision. He’s done better than all right in my book, so far.

  25. Trevor Green says:

    Peter Dinklage.

  26. Lysh says:

LAST of the Time Lords? I feel certain the show will go on despite regeneration rules. I’m really looking forward to Sunday now!

  27. Pat K. says:

The Moff made it clear at SDCC that the previous Doctors have not been ruled out. With the rumor happenings of the 50th anniversary show, I think it may be 8 because the 50th is supposed to be about the end of the time war so maybe the time loops back upon itself and starts back with 8. Or we find that the Meta Doctor CAN regenerate and Smith dies while the Meta lives on and we get Tennant back. As for new people, I am thoroughly confused as to who any of them can be, but I hope they skew towards a 40ish Doctor this time. Male or female, just a bit older than Smith was when he signed on.

  28. me says:

I don’t think it will happen, but I would LOVE to see Benedict Cumberbatch take the role. After seeing him in Sherlock, he would be my first choice.

  29. jessejames36 says:

“For the last of the Time Lords, the clock is striking twelve.ā€ It’s well documented that The Doctor is the last time lord, but Moffat is technically not saying that 12 is the last Doctor. At least I really hope the series does not end anytime soon.

As long as the actor that plays The Doctor *is* The Doctor, I don’t care who/what they are or look like.

  30. Josh Zeller says:

Looking forward to finding out whoever it is! What an exciting time for the series!

  31. Lisa says:

I seriously have only just gotten used to Matt Smith because of the long hiatus I needed after 10. I suppose I’ll get used to the new guy in time, as long as it is, in fact, a guy. I cannot and will not watch a femme doctor.
