New DOCTOR WHO Image Promises Explosive Adventure in Season 9

Generally when a company releases a promotional image, it’s just that: an image to promote something. These are very commonplace in the entertainment world, and especially rampant when dealing with television program— which usually show you a bunch of images of that season’s cast standing looking at camera all glowering or smiling, depending on what kind of show it is. (Happy “cheese” smiles wouldn’t work for Hannibal, yunnerstand.) Anyway, usually they don’t tell us much, but this new Doctor Who promo image/wallpaper actually is very informative despite not seeming like it.

Okay, at first glance, sure: it’s just the Twelfth Doctor (Peter Capaldi) and Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) running away from an explosion that’s actually quite far away from them on a planet or moon that looks basically deserted. Pretty average, but we actually get a lot of character things from the image. First, the Doctor and Clara are hand-in-hand. Remember last year, when all of the images were them sort of at odds with each other? (Which actually depicted the relationship between the two of them rather well.) Here, though, they’re clearly a team—a lot more in keeping with what happened post-“Last Christmas.”

Second, would you look at Clara’s face? It’s pretty obvious she’d walk with the Doctor away from or into any explosion. That was one of my favorite bits of Series 8—Clara being sort of in love with the adventure of the whole thing, even if it led to tragedy. Now, with the two of them on equal footing, it’s likely not to be so tragic (I hope).

I’d also like to point out that Capaldi’s trousers are checkered, which is very much like the First and Second Doctor’s. We all know what a big fanboy Capaldi is, and I’m sure—along with the very Pertwee-inspired jacket—the trousers were a deliberate nod to the past. I know some people aren’t crazy about his zip-up hoodie look, but I think it looks pretty badass, especially if we’re going to see this Doctor shred on a guitar at some point.

Anyway, of course I’m reading too much into things, but that’s half the fun! Besides, we’ve only got a little over a month left before new Who and the anticipation is killing me! And don’t forget, you can see the two-part finale of last series in 3D cinemas prior to the premiere, too!

Let me know what silly theories you’re raising from this one image in the comments below!
