New Details About Telltale’s BATMAN Series Emerge at SXSW

He is vengeance. He is the night. He is Batman. And now DC Comics’ Caped Crusader is the latest iconic character to get a Telltale Games series. New details about the highly anticipated series emerged during Telltale’s SXSW Gaming Expo panel, which was hosted by Kinda Funny‘s Greg Miller.

The series will take place in present-day Gotham City, but will not be connected to any existing iteration of Batman in the comics, films, animated series, or games. Players will step into both the role of Bruce Wayne and Batman. Extra cool, is the fact that decisions made as Bruce Wayne during the day will help shape the evolution of the city, as well as the criminals Batman must contend with at night.

The game will employ Telltale’s signature comic book-style of animation, taking stylistic inspiration from “the works of over 75 years of artists such as Jim Lee, Greg Capullo, and Neal Adams,” according to a post on their website.

Tonally, the game will be very adult, earning an M rating, and will have the feel of an R-rated film.

“This iteration of Batman will give fans a first-hand opportunity to dive deeper into the complex life and mind of Bruce Wayne, the duality of his own identity, and the struggle of responsibility in saving a city overcome with corruption and villainy,” said Telltale Games CEO Kevin Bruner during The Game Awards in December 2015.

For those of you hoping to see Robin and Nightwing, well, you’re flat out of luck. The game will primarily focus on Bruce Wayne and Batman, and the balance between that dual-identity. However, series staples like James Gordon, Alfred Pennyworth, Renee Montoya, and Vicki Vale will all make appearances. These characters will have personal relationships with Bruce Wayne in his private life, and decisions made either as Bruce or Batman will influence whether they head towards redemption or corruption. As for what villains the Dark Knight will face, those are being kept under lock and key. (Fingers crossed for Clayface.)
