New Chart Tracks All of Disney’s Animated Sequels and Live-Action Remakes

The modern Walt Disney Studios has demonstrated a fondness for franchises and a willingness to utilize their deep library of animated films. Even after acquiring Pixar, Marvel, and Lucasfilm, Disney is keeping a steady line of live-action remakes coming, including Beauty and the Beast, The Jungle Book, and even the recently announced Aladdin prequel, Genies.

Of course, Disney wouldn’t be pursuing this strategy if it wasn’t working. CEO Bob Iger’s laser focus on franchises has tremendously increased the company’s profits and allowed it to remain one of the biggest media companies in the world. Whether that always leads to good movies is a matter of debate.

Is there any title in Disney’s animation vault that the company hasn’t already lined up for sequels or a live-action remake? Surprisingly, yes. A newly released chart has tracked the remake/sequel/spinoff status of Disney’s entire animated feature film library beginning with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and ending with Zootopia, which is coming out next year.

Disney Sequel chart
One of the surprises on the chart are the fact that none of Disney’s animated films from 2004 to 2009 have any further activity at all! Those films include Home on the Range, Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons, Bolt, and The Princess and the Frog. Most of the Disney movies from the ‘80s are also untouched, including The Black Cauldron, The Great Mouse Detective, and Oliver & co.

Among the classic Disney films, Bambi has only had one direct-to-video sequel, while Disney’s Robin Hood and The Aristocats are also dormant. And while a Pinocchio (pictured above) live-action remake hasn’t happened yet, it is in development alongside live-action remakes of Dumbo, Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh, and Mulan.
