New BLADE RUNNER 2049 Trailer Sets Jared Leto as the Big Bad Building a Replicant Army

So far, the trailers for Blade Runner 2049 have had us asking two questions: 1) Why has Harrison Ford‘s Rick Deckard been in hiding for 30 years? and 2) Why does Ryan Gosling‘s Officer K need his help for a dangerous mission? Well, after the latest sneak peek for the movie we might have huge part of the answer to both. It looks like the story’s big bad is Jared Leto, and he is building an army of replicants.

In this new international spot, we once again hear from Leto’s soft-spoken, creepy Niander Wallace about how “humanity cannot survive” and “replicants are the future of the species.” That’s followed by Robin Wright’s Lt. Joshi of the LAPD telling Gosling’s K that Wallace “has every gun in the city” while she has him. But what follows next is the first time we have heard just what is so important it requires the help of Rick Deckard–as Gosling tells him, Wallace is “constructing an army.”

As we remember from the original, Deckard was a Blade Runner who was able to identify even the most proficient replicants, no matter who or what he was himself. (Of course, we still don’t have a hard answer the decades-old question from the original about whether or not Deckard is a human or a replicant.) The 1982 original film was concerned with the danger posed by a handful of replicants, but 35 years is certainly plenty of time to build a whole army of them.
