New A.I. Program From Gmail Will Type E-Mail Responses For You

It’s a fast-paced world; no one has the time to actually answer emails anymore. Maybe some lay about has the free time to type “sounds good,” but not you, important person. Well, don’t you worry, because Gmail has just the thing for you—an A.I. program that will actually type up responses for you.

“Smart Reply” from Gmail actually sounds pretty cool. For short emails that only require a short response, Smart Reply will give you three quick responses to choose from. For longer emails that require a more intricate response, it will give you the beginning of a reply. You simply then tap the response you want to send or use.

The more you use it, the more it will learn about the types of replies you use and adapt to make them better.

Smart Reply will be available later this week on Google Play and the App Store. If you’re a programmer, or just really interested in the actual schematics behind the program, you can read about it at the Google Research blog.

This is an easy program to make jokes about (and don’t think I didn’t immediately start to think about a Matrix prequel, or that I didn’t start to worry about Smart Reply having a couple of drinks and sending out some late night emails I’ll regret in the morning), but most of us know how demoralizing it can be to open up your inbox near the end of the day only to see a cavalcade of emails you have to respond to.

This should actually be very helpful.

Right up until the computers decide they don’t need us to actually pick the responses. Or send the emails in the first place.

Or even exist.

But until then, like I said, very helpful!

So what do you think of this? Will you use it? You’ll have to type your response all on your own in our comments below.
