New 1 Terabyte PlayStation 4 Model Spotted

Let’s be honest– 500 GB of hard drive space for the newest generation of home consoles hasn’t been enough. Though half a terabyte originally sounded like a perfect starting point, most folks instantly realized it wouldn’t be enough hard drive real estate when every other game required 50 GBs of storage. Recent rumors have Microsoft tackling the problem by releasing an Xbox One console with double the digital space capacity. Well, thankfully for those that only own a Playstation 4, it looks like Sony will be taking the same approach. The Federal Communication Commission has certified two new PS4 models that are very similar to each other, except for one includes a 1TB hard drive. We expect either an announcement or some more news concerning these new models from Sony come E3.

According to the FCC documents, the new models are not the “slim” models that both Microsoft and Sony typically release during console cycles, but instead the new models focus on the innards. Some may be disappointed that it won’t be a complete redesign, but the new additions are most certainly welcomed. For starters, one of the two models will include that desperately needed 1TB hard drive, and even that still may prove to not be enough. There are also new changes to the guts compared the the model that released almost 2 years ago. The new models will output less wattage, going from 250 watts to the new 230 watts. Amperage has also gone from 2.3-9.95 A to 2.5.1.15 A.

Lastly, the console has gone on a diet and will now weigh 2.5 kilograms, as opposed to the 2.8 kilograms of the original. Who hasn’t been clamoring for a lighter home console? Yes, the weight of the console may seem insignificant, but it tells us that the components inside are getting smaller, which will eventually warrant the redesign people are waiting for.

1 TB of for game downloads and saves still doesn’t seem like enough, especially for those trying to go all digital. It is a start, though, purchasing a separate, much larger data storage component is still cheaper than purchasing a whole new console all together. It is simple enough to swap out as well, so for many it should still be a viable choice. Store your thoughts in the comments section below and let us know if you will jump at the chance of purchasing the new SKU of the console.
