Netflix’s WET HOT AMERICAN SUMMER Series Goes Full-VHS in New Promo

Welcome to Camp Firewood, where all your summer camping dreams can come true. Or, at least that’s what this minute-long promotional video would have you believe. But not even the crystal-clear purity of VHS formatting could make us forget we’re actually watching a trailer for Netflix’s new series of Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp, the continuation of the 2001 cult classic Wet Hot American Summer. The movie was a very weird, absurdist take on the summer camp movie, featuring many folks who would go on to become Hollywood comedic royalty.

Those people are all back here — and then some — which we see briefly in the hazy tape-inspired clips, including Paul Rudd, Amy Poehler, Bradley Cooper, Ken Marino, Joe Lo Truglio, Michael Ian Black, Molly Shannon, Elizabeth Banks, Christopher Meloni, David Hyde Pierce, and Janeane Garofalo. Even the voice of the promo video, H. Jon Benjamin, was in the original movie — portraying the pivotal role of Can of Vegetables.

Going through the IMDb page for the series gives you a real good idea of the degree and caliber of talent show creators David Wain and Michael Showalter are bringing to their eight-episode series. It’s an embarrassment of comedic riches, perfect for the kind of genre-skewering Wain and Showalter do best. Fans of the original movie look to be in good hands, if the tone of the video plus the tape breaks showing some kind of lewd activity are to be believed.

Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp will be bugling its way to Netflix in its entirety on July 31st. We know you’ll probably watch it all at once, because what else are you doing this summer?
