It was announced today that Netflixâthe streaming service created to rekindle nostalgia and keep dreams aliveâhas order 12 new episodes (which is like 4 British seasons worth!) of Charlie Brooker‘s very excellent Black Mirror to be released exclusively through the streaming service. We already knew Netflix was making more of the show, but the sheer amount of it is equal parts exciting and impressive. In the wake of the #PigGate fiasco it is nice to have a less-upsetting reason to bring up the beloved series.
Brooker, however, couldn’t help but make a tongue-in-cheek reference to the #PigGate connection in a quote from the official Netflix announcement today. “It’s all very exciting â a whole new bunch of Black Mirror episodes on the most fitting platform imaginable. Netflix connects us with a global audience so that we can create bigger, stranger, more international and diverse stories than before, whilst maintaining that ‘Black Mirror’ feel. I just hope none of these new story ideas come true.”
On the other side of the table, Netflix Vice President Cindy Holland could not be more excited for the collaboration. “Charlie has created a one-of-a-kind series with an uncanny voice and prescient, darkly comedic vision. Weâre tremendously proud to bring Black Mirror to our members as a Netflix original series.” Trust us, Ms. Holland, you have done humanity a great service this day.
Black Mirror, an anthology show in the same vein as The Twilight Zone, has won critical acclaim and commercial success with it’s darkly satirical, and strikingly uncanny look at the modern world and the frighting place it can be. The first two season have previously aired on BBC4 and are already available to stream through Netflix. No official release date has been announced yet for the new episodes.
