NETFLIX’s First Trailer for BRIGHT Shows Will Smith Working His Magic

Today at San Diego Comic-Con, Netflix unveiled their first trailer for Bright, a Will Smith/Joel Edgerton buddy cop action film about different races getting along. Except the different races are humans, orcs, elves, and fairies.

That’s because Bright, written by Dirk Gently‘s Max Landis and directed by Suicide Squad‘s David Ayers, takes place in a world where Middle Earth has come to modern day America. In the trailer we see what happens when Smith’s character gets teamed up with the first ever orc cop, played by an unrecognizable Edgerton. That alone would be a story worth following, but things really hit the fantasy fan for them when they come across a magical wand that has criminals and cops alike clamoring for its magic powers.

With such a unique premise this could very easily have come across as a pure comedy (or worse, something totally confusing like Smith’s uneven Hancock), but this trailer certainly looks like they found the right balance of humor, fantasy, and sincere drama.

Plus police officer Will Smith carries a sword. Forget just watching the movie, we’d play that MMO.

Bright comes to Netflix later this year in time for Christmas, on December 22nd.

But what do you think of Bright? Which fantasy elements do you most hope to see in the film. Let us know in the comments below and on Twitter.
