Netflix Announces Flixtape, the Mixtape for Movies

“It’s like a mixtape, but for Netflix.” So reads the slogan for Flixtape, a new Netflix feature that allows users to make customized playlists of their favorite shows and films.

As Indiewire reports, the streaming goliath has now make it possible for people to organize “flixtapes” around a specific theme, mood, or message—a move that will only further fracture our already mangled attention spans. Netflix released a short video to announce the news (see below), which shares the four-step process to making your own flixtape.

First, give it a name. A Netflix algorithm then suggests three titles based on that name. (I tested the feature with one called “The Nerdist Playlist” and was offered: Trailer Park Boys, Trailer Park Boys: The Movie, and the UK version of The Office… ¯\_(ツ)_/¯). In the Edit your Playlist step, users can rearrange, remove, or replace those suggestions as they see fit for a total of up to six titles. Then you get to customize the cover of your badass new flixtape before sharing it with the world.

There are a handful of pre-made flixtapes as well. The Family Reunion Flixtape, for instance, includes Family Guy, Fuller House, F is for Family, Grace and Frankie, Bloodline, and Gilmore Girls.

Unfortunately you can’t add individual episodes to playlists, which would be super cool, but this is a pretty great idea nonetheless. Finally we can go full boombox-in-arms John Cusack—albeit the less romantic millennial version where we’re holding a screen that’s playing way too much Trailer Park Boys.

Have any moods or themes that would make for killer flixtapes? Let us know in the comments.
