Santa Barbara four-piece Nerf Herder have earned their nerd stripes over the years. After writing the theme song for Buffy the Vampire Slayer and releasing a music video starring Mark Hamill, the band has little left to prove that they are, indeed, authentic, nerf-herding nerds.
âAuthentic nerdsâ are, not surprisingly, the target of Nerf Herderâs latest effort, a lyric video for their overtly nerdy song, âAt the Con.â Drummer Steve Sherlock described the track as “a smorgasbord of nerdiness. What else could you ask for? The majority of references in this song will only be understood by authentic nerds.â
âAt the Con,â coated in the same pop-punk sound that established Nerf Herder as a formidable âgeek rockâ presence in the mid-’90s, blazes through three minutes of driving guitar, vigorous drums, and earnest vocals. The essence of the song, though, is the myriad lyrical references to nerd culture.
âAll week Iâve been slaving at work / Now Iâm gonna dress up like a Captain Kirk,â sings guitarist and singer, Parry Gripp. In the video, the lyrics are plastered onto the screen in comic book fonts amidst animated drawings of the band and the other referenced subjects. âStan Lee and a Spiderman / Are gonna play some Settlers of Catan.â
Gripp goes on to reference Harry Potter, Dr. Who, Game of Thrones, Star Trek, Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Pokémon, LARPing, and virtually every other nerd realm you can possibly imagineâeven “FILKING.”
“We learned the word ‘FILK’ and the art of ‘FILKING’ when we played at Dragon*Con in Atlanta,” said Sherlock in a statement. “You’ll just have to Google it and find out for yourself. It’s not dirty…we promise.”
“At the Con” will appear on the band’s upcoming record Rockinghamâout March 11. This one’s for all you scruffy-looking nerf herders out there. Check out the video and let us know what you think in the comments.
