Nerdvengers Assemble: Marvel Announces MCU Phase III Titles

Let’s face it, guys — between yesterday’s hullabaloo about Benedict Cumberbatch being heavily eyeballed for Doctor Strange and the seismic impact of last week’s Avengers: Age of Ultron trailer, we’ve all got Marvel on the brain. Today, the House of Ideas invited us to the El Capitan Theater in downtown Hollywood for something billed only as #MarvelEvent. What could it be? Will they reveal who is actually playing Doctor Strange? Will they unveil Black Panther and Captain Marvel movies? Will they confirm that Squirrel Girl is the centerpiece of Phase III like we’ve all long suspected? Anything is possible! Join us beginning at 11AM PT for a live blog of this morning’s marvelous Marvel announcements and we’ll do our damnedest to keep you up to date unless Hydra manages to take out the wi-fi.

12:03 PM: Is there room for the TV universe bleeding into the Cinematic universe in Infinity War? “There is certainly the opportunity.” That’s all she wrote, folks. Thanks for tuning in. Plenty of food for thought! Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

12:00 PM: Why won’t Black Widow get her own movie? “Her part in Avengers: Age of Ultron is very, very big”, but “today’s presentation was all about introducing new characters.”

11:58 AM: “Whatever happened to the Runaways movie?” According to Feige, that script is still in their vault and the strength of that got Drew Pearce the Iron Man 3 co-writing job. “But again, we can’t make them all,” he concedes.

11:57 AM: The wi-fi calmed down long enough. We have a gallery of all the awesomeness that happened up on the screen for you.

11:56 AM: Since we don’t have the Fantastic Four, how will we meet the Inhumans? We may find out “sooner than [we’re] expecting, frankly.” Could this be a hint about Skye on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.?

11:55 AM: Serpent Society was a joke, but that isn’t to say it couldn’t happen in the future.

11:54 AM: Feige will not confirm that they’re specifically targeting female or minority directors; rather, they’re going to find the best writer/director/etc for the job.

11:51 AM: Anything announced today is still rumor or potentially still in negotiation. Ant-Man is truly the end of Phase II and Civil War kicks off Phase III which will have 9 films.

11:50 AM: No solo Hulk film confirmed, but Mark Ruffalo is signed on through 2019’s Infinity War.

11:49 AM:  “This is the Civil War of the Cinematic Universe, which will be inspired by the comic universe, but we’re in a very different continuity.”

11:48 AM: A few tidbits from the Q&A with Kevin Feige so far: On why they did a big event: “We wanted to do this at Comic-Con this year, but things were not set, so the comfort with dating a few of the other movies [wasn’t there].” On why they didn’t announce Doctor Strange casting: “If it were confirmed, they would have introduced Doctor Strange today too. There’s always been speculation for a lot of other actors for Black Panther, but I’m very glad that casting didn’t leak in earnest. Like everything else, it will be released sometime before the release of the movie.” On when we’ll meet Black Panther: “Black Panther is definitively a big part of Civil War. We will meet him in Captain America 3: Civil War.”

11:36 AM: The official event ended. Q&A with Feige coming shortly.

11:34 AM: They just rock paper scissored for his allegiance. Iron Man won, but Black Panther is a free spirit.

11:33 AM: They just introduced Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther. Love this casting!

11:32 AM: SERPENT SOCIETY was a red herring. CAPTAIN AMERICA 3 will be CIVIL WAR and now Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans have taken the stage.

11:31 AM: Super tense wood chopping scene.

11:30 AM: And now an exclusive AGE OF ULTRON scene from midway through the movie.

11:27 AM: What about May 4, 2018? THANOS IS WIELDING THE INFINITY GAUNTLET. Its teaser for AVENGERS 3: INFINITY WAR. PART I comes on May 4, 2018. PART II drops May 3, 2019.

11:25: On November 2, 2018, their twentieth film will be INHUMANS. I am so goddamn excited right now.

11:24: CAPTAIN MARVEL! CAPTAIN MARVEL, aka Carol Danvers, is coming on July 6, 2018.

11:23: BLACK PANTHER! BLACK PANTHER confirmed for Nov. 3, 2017.

11:22 AM: Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston are returning for THOR: RAGNAROK on July 28, 2017. Picks up immediately after AGE OF ULTRON.

11:20 AM: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY 2 is now on May 5, 2017.

11:19 AM: Quantum mechanics, string theory, etc are all part of the supernatural in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

11:18 AM: DOCTOR STRANGE coming to theaters on November 4, 2016.

11:17 AM: “Let’s talk about Phase 3” as he shows a slide of untitled films. CAPTAIN AMERICA 3, subtitled SERPENT SOCIETY, will be May 6, 2016.

11:15 AM: Marvel has made $7 billion over 10 films. GUARDIANS OF THE GALXY is number one movie in the US, number two in the world.

11:10 AM: Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige takes the stage to thunderous applausr. They’re showing us the AGE OF ULTRON trailer again, which has over 70m million views.

11:08 AM: Finally starting!

11:07 AM: Joss Whedon, the Russo Brothers, and Scott Derrickson are all sitting in the crowd too.

10:29 AM: We are waiting patiently for the event to begin. The El Capitan is decked out for Halloween and there is a gentleman playing classic movie themes on a vintage Wurlitzer organ.
