THE FAR CRY is a novel by Fredric Brown, who’s had such novels as THE SCREAMING MIMI also adapted for film.

(The Donald Barthelme NEW YORKER short story, “The Joker’s Greatest Triumph,” which probably sparked the Adam West BATMAN series’s creation, features a caricature of Brown, whose conversation with Bruce Wayne runs as a thread throughout the story.)
