Nerdist Playlist: Countdown To Doctor Who Season Eight

Time(y wimey) is ticking down and the long awaited season premiere of Doctor Who‘s eighth season is nigh. So as we prepare for the reign of our new Doctor, Peter Capaldi, we decided to compile a playlist of tracks that we think and will characterize the 12th Doctor before he officially steps aboard the TARDIS to TAR-DISH out some multidimensional, trans-galactic justice.

Based on inside sources and our own resident Whovian’s expert anaylsis, we are gearing up for Capaldi’s Doctor to be a no-nonsense deducer who will not balk at taking on larger challenges, though he may throw some shade here and there should circumstances ruffle his feathers sufficiently. This is an exciting departure from the goodnatured, sometimes whimsical miens of our previous two Doctors, so we have selected 10 songs that we hope will characterize Peter Capaldi’s darker, grittier, perhaps curmudgeonly take on our favorite humanoid.

The tracks below range from universally self-explanatory (Ty Segall and Mikal Cronin’s sludgy “Doctor Doctor”) to outwardly crusty (Tom Waits’ “Get Lost”). I threw Massive Attack’s “Teardrop” on the list because I can’t fight the feeling that Peter Capaldi’s Doctor will remind me of a similarly lovable, yet irascible doctor. We also thought it appropriate to bid adieu to Clara with Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U”. Hey, even the toughest of Doctors are entitled to feeling feels about their companions. Enjoy the playlist and let us know what songs you think should absolutely be on this mix in the comments below and on Twitter!
