Ben, could the Batman writer you’re thinking of be Mike W. Barr? Probably his two most prominent Batman stories were Batman: Son of the Demon (with incredible artwork by Jerry Bingham) and Batman: Year Two (illustrated by both the inimitable Alan Davis and a very early Todd McFarlane).
