NBC Wants to GAME OF THRONES-ify The Land of OZ in EMERALD CITY Series

NBC is hoping to find its Game of Thrones in Oz. The wizardly ways of the once-dead pilot Emerald City have been resurrected this season with a new executive producer and the hope that a dark and death-filled retelling of the L. Frank Baum iconic story will be exactly the fantasy series to combat the HBO series with ALL of the ratings.

And it will probably be a nice little companion to their live musical iteration of The Wiz slated to come out next year, too.

Originally given a series order in January 2014 only to have it renege on said offer that August, Emerald City was again given a straight-to-series order — only this time with 10 episodes and a new executive producer on board, David Schulner.

The show, originally executive produced by Matthew Arnold and Josh Friedman, will pull not only from the original The Wizard of Oz, but all thirteen sequels that came after it. This decidedly darker twist will focus on the many kingdoms and players vying for supremacy in the Land of Oz. (Uh, sound familiar, everyone?)

According to NBC, via Deadline, this take on the tale will follow as thus: “In the blink of a tornado’s eye, 20-year-old Dorothy Gale and her K9 police dog are transported to another world, one far removed from our own — a mystical land of competing kingdoms, lethal warriors, dark magic and a bloody battle for supremacy. This is the fabled Land of Oz in a way you’ve never seen before, where wicked witches don’t stay dead for long and a young girl becomes a headstrong warrior who holds the fate of kingdoms in her hands.”

So — are you interested in a potentially Thrones-y take on Oz? Let us hear your thoughts in the comments.
