NBC Releases First Teaser for ROSEMARY’S BABY Miniseries

NBC has released the first trailer for its upcoming Rosemary’s Baby miniseries adaptation. Based on the novel by Ira Levin, Rosemary’s Baby was also adapted into a very successful film written and directed by Roman Polanski and starring Mia Farrow, John Cassavetes, Ruth Gordon and Sidney Blackmer. Gordon won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Minnie Castevet, and Polanski’s film is considered to be one of the best horror films of all time.

All that being said, it would appear that NBC looked at the current popularity of witches and the supernatural in horror and decided to remake the film into a two part miniseries event premiering on May 11 and concluding on May 15. While I am not inherently anti-reboot or remake (everyone, let’s consider that David Cronenberg’s The Fly and John Carpenter’s The Thing are both remakes) I’m not sure about this one. On the one hand, NBC is doing right by genre fans with their fan favorite Hannibal, considered to be one of the best and most graphic shows on television. I also like the idea of a 4-hour miniseries expanding on a film adaptation, whereas perhaps the Polanski film had to cut material from the Levin novel for time.

On the other hand, Rosemary’s Baby is about so much more than witches and Satanic cults. It’s a film that resonated with so many people not just because of the supernatural imagery but also because of what it was saying at the time that it came out. In addition to scares, Polanski’s film also served as a commentary about anxieties over pregnancy and over women’s bodies in the 1960s. It was about anxiety over marriage and what it meant to be successful. All of those topics are still wildly controversial today, my question is: Is NBC willing to tackle them in the same way?

Watch the trailer below and judge for yourself. What are your thoughts on the matter? Is it time for Rosemary’s Baby to get an update? How does the miniseries look to you? Tell us in the comments below. Rosemary’s Baby premieres on May 11 and concludes on May 15 on NBC.

I didn’t know it was based on a book. I’m interested in seeing a different interpretation of that story.

  2. Deborah says:

I honestly find it insulting that anyone thinks they can remake Rosemary’s Baby. That movie is the pinnacle of dark dramas from the late 60 early 70s with other such movies as Midnight Cowboy, A Clockwork Orange, and The French Connection, and also the birth of modern film.
