NASA Uploads Carl Sagan’s Awesome Mix Vol. 1 to SoundCloud

Back in 1977, a committee chaired by the late, great Carl Sagan sent two golden records into space aboard the twin Voyager spacecraft. If they are ever played, the listeners will be extraterrestrials.

“The Golden Record” had two sides, one is the protective cover (seen in the image above) that has the instructions on how to play the record. The other side is the record itself, encoded with 115 images in analog and dozens of Earthly sounds. If aliens play the record at 16-2/3 revolutions per minute, they will hear everything from whale song to greetings in 55 languages to music from Chuck Berry and Mozart.

The sounds themselves have been available online for some time, but never easily. Just yesterday, NASA uploaded a selection of the Golden Record’s sounds to SoundCloud, giving humans everywhere simple access to the sounds that aliens could someday hear. The first two playlists are below:
