N.W.A. Are the Newest Members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

N.W.A has been nominated for induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame three times before, but now, on their fourth and most recent nomination, the seminal hip-hop group has finally made it, and are now officially hall of famers.

2015 was big for the group, despite their heyday being in the late 80s and early 90s: Straight Outta Compton became the highest grossing musical biopic of all time, while the album and song of the same name also placed higher in Billboard’s charts than they ever had before.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, founding member Ice Cube said it means a lot to the group and adds meaning to their cultural impact, even if the praise is coming after the fact.

“It’s hard to sum up exactly what it means. It means a lot of things,” he said. “It means that the group’s mark is kind of solidified. It’s all legitimized in a way because the whole music industry has to honor the group in a way. It’s just hard to sum up in words, really. It’s everything that kind of eluded us in a lot of ways when we were coming up. So many people were opinionated about N.W.A.. I think everyone now at this point, no matter how you feel about us, understands what the group actually did and what it means to modern music. I think the movie helped to get people to remember that.”

Other artists joining N.W.A in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame include Deep Purple (a.k.a. the writers of the first guitar riff every aspiring player learns), Cheap Trick, Chicago, and Steve Miller.

What do you think of this year’s Hall of Fame class? Let us know in the comments who you think should have been inducted: Chic, Janet Jackson, Nine Inch Nails, and the Smiths were notably snubbed this time around.
