MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000 Revival Crushes Kickstarter Records

In the not-too-distant future, somewhere in time and space, there’s gonna be a full season of the new Mystery Science Theater 3000 revival! On Friday, the month-long MST3K Kickstarter campaign finished with $5,764,229, which makes it the most-funded video project in Kickstarter history. Take that, Veronica Mars!

MST3K raised over $600,000 in additional funding through the Kickstarter Add-On store which brought the combined total up to more than $6.3 million. Because of the additional funds, the previously planned 12 episode season will now be 14 episodes long, including a special holiday episode for yuletide riffing.

The Mystery Science Theater 3000 Kickstarter campaign was spearheaded by series creator Joel Hodgson and Shout! Factory, the new owners of the franchise. The Nerdist podcast co-host Jonah Ray will be the host of the revived MST3K, where he will portray Jonah Heston. Felicia Day will co-star as Kinga Forrester, the new Mad scientist, with Patton Oswalt as TV’s Son of TV’s Frank. Comedians Hampton Yount and Baron Vaughn will provide the new voices of Crow and Tom Servo, respectively.

Earlier this week, Hodgson announced that several guest writers will participate in the new MST3K, including Community creator Dan Harmon and Dana Gould. Additionally, Mark Hamill, Jerry Seinfeld, and Joel McHale are all slated to make cameo appearances.

The new Mystery Science Theater 3000 is expected to begin production in 2016. It’s currently unknown if the revival will be pitched to a cable network or streaming service, but with over 48,000 backers, maybe they don’t need anybody else.
