First Trailer for Duncan Jones’ MUTE Sets Up a Neo-Noir Mystery in a Sci-Fi World

If filmmaker Duncan Jones has claim to an M.O., it might be the telling of strikingly intimate stories set in a mesmerizing science-fiction and fantasy landscapes. Jones executed this endeavor to great success in his feature debut, 2009’s Moon, and his sophomore outing, 2011’s Source Code, and seems to be going for the gold once again in his latest venture: Mute, whose first trailer shows off a Blade Runner-esque backdrop safeguarding an intensely personal premise.

Alexander Skarsgard plays the perpetually speechless lead, a bartender who sidelines his own secrets in order to investigate those involving the love of his life, a likewise mysterious cocktail waitress (Seyneb Saleh). On his tail are American doctors and, ostensibly, de facto private eyes played by Paul Rudd and Justin Theroux, both draped in the doofiest casual wear and follicular arrangements imaginable. (And yes, we are all in for that.)

Although the trailer does offer a few glimpses of some pretty dire circumstances that are set to ensnare our silent hero, as of yet, it’s anyone’s guess where Skarsgard’s character’s quest to save his beloved will take him. What sorts of science-fiction concepts will Jones’ take on 2052 Berlin feature, and what thrills and horrors will the adventure therethrough drudge up? Truth be told, we’re excited to say that we’ve got no idea just yet—Jones’ creative juices have proved surprising and satisfying in the past, and we’re looking forward to more of the same… yet also quite different.
